Black Out

From Southern California, to parts of Arizona and down to Mexico, we experienced power loss for about 10 hours. I was driving down my street about to approach my house, when my car radio went silent. I checked other stations and they were all static. Weird I thought. Then I pulled into my driveway and saw my husband come out of the house. He said the power just went out. I told him about my radio going out, and we both had a weird feeling. Of course when radio stations go out, you think the worst. And then when you hear how much of an area was effected, one thing came to mind, terrorist attack. Luckily that was not the case. I'm sure for many other people, it was a stressful evening, especially for those who got stuck in elevators or stranded when the trolly system shut down. But for us, we were home safe, and had a relaxing evening drinking wine in candle light. 

I know many people got together with neighbors and had BBQs. It was a night for community and spending time with each other, without all the distractions. When we took our dogs for a walk, it was weird seeing so many people hanging out in the front of their house, just trying to make the best of the situation. One radio station was working and giving updates about the situation. As we walked down our street, people had their car doors open, and that station playing.

A part of me didn't want the power to come back so soon. It was kind of nice to stop and think about how blessed we are with the technology we have, and how dependent we are on it.

Thankfully there was not a large amount of crime last night, but there was some sewage spills into a few locations. Some areas were told to boil their water. All schools were cancelled today because they weren't sure last night if the power would be back and some businesses opened up later in the day. 

Below I have two pictures that show you the difference between last night and a normal night. The first one shows the black out. The only lights in this picture are from cars on the freeway and the second picture shows how our view normally looks.
